Privacy at a Glance
- No Fish Wizard account or login is required.
- Your fishing records are stored locally on your device by default, with optional private iCloud sync.
- Optional anonymous usage data consists only of feature-use counts and can be turned off at any time.
- Fish Wizard does not use advertising or tracking SDKs.
- Photo, location, and notification access are optional and used only for features you choose to use.
Information the App Handles
Fishing journal data
Fish Wizard lets you enter and save trip dates and times, water-body names, fishing methods, target species, duration, notes, catches, fish measurements, optional saved locations and conditions, photos, achievement progress, XP history, and app settings. This information is stored on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. If you turn on iCloud Sync, your log can sync through your private iCloud account. Fish Wizard does not transmit your journal data to Shay Wade Fishing.
Photos and photo metadata
You may choose photos to attach to catches or start a Smart Fish Import scan for a selected day, month, or year. Fish Wizard may read the selected photo content, capture date, and embedded location metadata to identify likely fish photos, group related photos, and suggest trip details. Image classification is performed on your device. Nothing is added to your journal until you confirm it.
Location
Use Location is off by default. If you turn it on, Fish Wizard can save the locations you choose for trips and catches, suggest nearby waters, and look up conditions for the time and place of a catch. Fish Wizard does not maintain a standalone history of your device's current location or transmit your location to Shay Wade Fishing. Saved locations remain part of your locally stored journal data and can sync through your private iCloud account if you enable iCloud Sync.
Conditions and public data services
When you choose to use location-based conditions, Fish Wizard may ask Apple MapKit and public weather or water-data services for information near the selected location, such as weather, air temperature, water temperature when available, humidity, barometric pressure, and moon phase. Those providers process information needed to answer the request under their own privacy practices. Fish Wizard does not send this information to a developer-operated server.
Notifications
When you start a Fishing Now session, Fish Wizard may ask permission to schedule a local Still fishing? reminder after a period of inactivity. Notifications are optional, are created on your device, and can be changed in iOS Settings.
Backup files
You may export a JSON backup containing your Fish Wizard records or import a backup file you select. Exports and imports happen only when you initiate them. A file you save or share outside Fish Wizard is stored wherever you choose and is subject to the privacy and security practices of that destination.
Anonymous usage data
Fish Wizard counts which features get used so the app can be improved based on how people actually fish with it—for example, how many photo imports are started and finished, how many catches are logged by hand versus imported, and how many share cards are made.
These are counts only. They never include your catches, photos, notes, species, water bodies, or location. Nothing you log is sent.
Counts are grouped under a random identifier that is created on your device. It is not your Apple ID, your name, or an advertising identifier, and it is not derived from your device's hardware. It is a random value that exists only to group one device's counts together. There is no account, and nothing links that identifier to you.
This data is not used for tracking. It is never combined with data from other companies' apps or websites, it is never sold or shared with data brokers, and Fish Wizard contains no advertising software.
You can turn this off at any time in Settings > Privacy > Share Usage Data. Turning it off stops all usage data immediately and also discards the random identifier. If you turn it back on, a new identifier is created rather than the old one resumed.
Usage data is stored in Google Firebase, which Fish Wizard uses as its data processor.
Crash and error reports
When something in Fish Wizard fails—a sync error, a backup that won't restore, or a photo that won't import—a report is sent so the problem can be found and fixed. Reports contain error details and technical information about the app's state, such as whether iCloud Sync is on and how many records are stored. They never include your catches, photos, notes, water bodies, or location.
Crash and error reports are handled by Firebase Crashlytics.
How Information Is Used
Information handled by Fish Wizard is used to provide the features you request, including:
- Saving and displaying trips, catches, gear, notes, and photos.
- Calculating statistics, achievements, and XP progress.
- Reviewing selected photos and preparing Smart Import suggestions.
- Saving locations and looking up nearby waters or conditions when you turn on Use Location and request those features.
- Scheduling an optional local reminder for an active Fishing Now session.
- Creating and restoring user-initiated backup files.
- Understanding which features are used so Fish Wizard can be improved, if you choose to share anonymous usage data.
Sharing and Third-Party Services
Shay Wade Fishing does not sell, rent, or share Fish Wizard journal data for advertising, analytics, or tracking. Anonymous usage data is not used for tracking and is not combined with data from other companies' apps or websites. Fish Wizard does not include advertising or tracking SDKs.
Features may use Apple platform services such as Photos, Location Services, Vision, MapKit, geocoding, iCloud, the system notification service, the system share sheet, and the system file picker. Fish Wizard uses Google Firebase to process anonymous usage data and Firebase Crashlytics for crash and error reporting. Location-based conditions may also use public weather or water-data services. Information processed by those providers is governed by their applicable terms and privacy policies. When you choose to share an image or backup, the receiving app or service handles that information under its own privacy practices.
Retention and Deletion
Your journal data remains on your device until you delete individual records, use Settings > Delete User Data, or remove the app and its data from the device. The in-app deletion control removes saved trips, catches, locations, conditions, photos, achievement progress, XP history, and related app data from Fish Wizard. If iCloud Sync is enabled, deletion also removes synced journal data from your private iCloud account and other synced devices.
Fish Wizard cannot delete backup files or shared images that you saved outside the app. You must delete those items from their destination separately.
Turning off Share Usage Data immediately stops usage-data collection and discards the random identifier stored on your device.
Your Privacy Choices
- You can decline photo-library, location, or notification permission and continue using the app's other features.
- You can change Fish Wizard's photo, location, and notification permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
- You can turn Use Location or iCloud Sync on or off in Fish Wizard's Settings.
- You can turn Share Usage Data on or off at any time in Settings > Privacy.
- You can remove individual trips, catches, photos, locations, and other records inside the app.
- You can delete all locally stored user data from Fish Wizard's Settings screen.
Data Security
Fish Wizard relies on iOS and the security protections of your device for locally stored data. No method of electronic storage is completely secure, so keeping your device software and passcode protections up to date is recommended.
Children's Privacy
Fish Wizard is not directed to children under 13, and Shay Wade Fishing does not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app.
Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated if Fish Wizard's features or data practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will be revised when an update is published.
